Everything you should know about your lock.
A lock seems simple, a piece of metal with a keyhole. In practice it's a finely tuned mechanism affected by twenty years of use, weather conditions and hundreds of thousands of key movements. These are the things we explain to customers in Amsterdam, again and again, every day.
The difference between SKG*, SKG** and SKG***
The number of stars represents burglary resistance in a standardised test. Three stars means the lock withstands a professional burglar for at least five minutes, against all modern techniques (lock pulling, bumping, picking). Insurers increasingly require this.
Why a multi-point lock sometimes jams
A 3- or 5-point lock engages the frame in multiple places. Temperature changes, a sagging door or a worn latch bolt can throw it out of alignment. Forcing it makes things worse, professional adjustment is usually the solution.
Lock pulling, and why anti-pull protection matters
With lock pulling, burglars use special tools to pull the cylinder out of the lock. In as little as sixty seconds, with no noise. An SKG*** cylinder with anti-pull fittings makes this method nearly impossible.
What is a keyed-alike system?
One key for your front door, back door, shed, garage and storage room. No more expensive than separate cylinders, and more convenient than a bunch of six keys. We make them to order.
When is a lock truly worn out?
A key that turns roughly, a lock that feels like it's 'catching', or a latch bolt that no longer retracts smoothly are early signs. Graphite lubrication sometimes helps, replacement is often cheaper than continuing to struggle with it.
Bumping, picking and raking
These are the three most commonly used break-in methods in the Netherlands. A modern SKG*** cylinder with anti-pick pins, an anti-bump core and drill protection resists all three. A budget cylinder from the hardware store does not.
Myths
What many people think, and what's actually true.
The locksmith trade has many persistent misconceptions. Here we compare the most common ones with what we see in practice, day in day out, on the streets of Amsterdam.
'An expensive lock stops every burglar.'
Nonsense. A good lock in a rickety door or a rotten frame doesn't help at all. Security is always: lock + hardware + door + frame + your own behaviour (actually locking the door, not just pulling it shut).
'Burglars always go for the front door.'
In 70% of break-ins in the Netherlands, the back door, sliding door or a side window is the entry point. The front door is too visible.
'My lock is a good brand, so it's safe.'
A major brand offers both SKG* (hardware-store level) and SKG*** (police security label level). If in doubt, ask whether your cylinder has three stars, that's stamped on the cylinder head.
'Drilling is faster, so it's always more convenient.'
Drilling always means a new cylinder is needed. Opening damage-free costs you money once, drilling costs twice. We only drill when there's genuinely no other option.
'Anyone can duplicate keys.'
For a standard key, yes. For a certified SKG-protected key, proof of ownership and a registered milling machine are required. Not every small locksmith business is allowed to do that.

Wij zijn een lokaal slotenmakerbedrijf, gevestigd in Amsterdam. Onze monteurs rijden dagelijks door de wijken Centrum, Amsterdam-Noord, Oud-Zuid, Nieuw-West, IJburg, 't Zand, Watergraafsmeer en Zuidoost. Daardoor zijn we vrijwel altijd snel ter plaatse, kennen we de woningen en weten we welke sloten waar het meest voorkomen. Dat scheelt tijd én voorraadbeurten, want onze bus is uitgerust met de cilinders en mechanieken die we in deze regio dagelijks tegenkomen.
Een lokale slotenmaker verschilt op drie cruciale punten van een landelijk callcenterbedrijf. Ten eerste de aanrijtijd: wij zijn doorgaans binnen 10 tot 20 minuten ter plaatse, niet omdat we hard rijden, maar omdat we letterlijk om de hoek zitten. Ten tweede de prijs: u krijgt aan de telefoon en aan de deur dezelfde vaste prijs, geen plotselinge nachttoeslag, geen extra rekening voor 'speciale technieken' en geen prijsverhoging halverwege. Ten derde de kennis: wij weten dat in Amsterdam-Noord veel jaren '60 woningen met originele Lips-sluitwerk staan en dat in IJburg vooral moderne Nemef-meerpuntssloten zitten. Die kennis vertaalt zich in snellere diagnoses en juiste onderdelen direct bij de hand.
Veel klanten komen bij ons na een vervelende ervaring met een landelijke beller. Vaak begint dat met een internetzoekopdracht naar 'slotenmaker spoed', waarbij de zoekresultaten gedomineerd worden door bedrijven die overal in Nederland adverteren maar nergens een eigen monteur hebben. Wat u vervolgens krijgt is een onderaannemer van een derde partij die het werk subcontractet, met onduidelijke prijsafspraken en vaak een rekening die het dubbele is van wat aan de telefoon werd gezegd. Dat laatste is geen formaliteit maar een werkmethode: bij elke beveiligingsupgrade kijken we naar de complete situatie van uw woning of bedrijf en adviseren we de maatregelen met de beste verhouding tussen kosten en aantoonbaar effect. Dat betekent soms 'minder doen' dan wat we zouden kunnen verkopen, maar het is de enige manier om duurzaam vertrouwen op te bouwen.
Onze werkwijze van eerste telefoontje tot factuur
Als u ons belt, komt u direct in contact met een van onze monteurs of met de coördinator op kantoor. Geen keuzemenu, geen wachtmuziek. We stellen eerst een paar korte vragen om de situatie helder te krijgen: wat is het probleem, waar in de regio bent u, welk type slot zit er ongeveer, is het spoed of kan het op afspraak. Op basis daarvan noemen we een vanaf-prijs die aansluit bij wat u op onze website ziet. Akkoord? Dan rijden we naar u toe. Geen akkoord? Dan kost het niets en hangen we vriendelijk op.
Bij aankomst stelt onze monteur eerst een diagnose. Bij een spoedopening kijkt hij naar het slot en bepaalt hij welke techniek de minste tijd kost en geen schade veroorzaakt. Bij een planbare klus, zoals cilindervervanging of beveiligingsupgrade, neemt hij u door de opties heen: welk cilinderniveau past bij uw situatie, of een gelijksluitend systeem zinvol is, of het kerntrekrisico op uw deur aanwezig is. Hij geeft een vaste prijs voor het werk inclusief materiaal. Pas na uw expliciete akkoord begint hij.
Tijdens het werk legt onze monteur uit wat hij doet en waarom. Geen onbegrijpelijke vaktaal, geen drama. Na afloop krijgt u een korte uitleg over het nieuwe slot of de uitgevoerde reparatie, de juiste manier om het te onderhouden, en wat u moet doen als er ooit iets niet werkt. U betaalt met pin of contant en ontvangt direct een nette factuur per e-mail. Voor cilinders geldt tien jaar garantie op materiaal en twee jaar op montage; bij spoedopeningen krijgt u een schriftelijke bevestiging die u bij uw verzekeraar kunt indienen.
We werken zeven dagen per week en zijn ook 's nachts bereikbaar. Voor spoed berekenen we tussen 22:00 en 07:00 een eerlijke avond- of nachttarief dat we vooraf aan de telefoon noemen, zodat u nooit voor verrassingen komt te staan. In het weekend geldt hetzelfde tarief als doordeweeks overdag; geen weekendtoeslag, geen feestdagentoeslag, geen verborgen kosten.

Wij zijn geen schreeuwerig adverteerbedrijf met grote letters en agressieve marketing. Onze grootste reclamebron is mond-tot-mondreclame: klanten die ons aanbevelen aan buren, familie en collega's. Daarnaast hebben ze een Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag, want u laat ze niet voor niets binnen in uw eigen huis op een moment dat u juist kwetsbaar bent.
Wij werken alleen met merken en producten die zich bewezen hebben. Voor cilinders zijn dat M&C, Mauer, Iseo, Pfaffenhain, Abus en DOM. Voor meerpuntssloten Nemef, KFV, Maco, GU en Winkhaus. Voor hangsloten Abus Granit en gelijkwaardig. Voor smart locks Yale Linus en Nuki, altijd in combinatie met een fysieke back-up. Goedkope no-name producten verkopen we niet, simpelweg omdat de besparing op aankoop u op termijn meer kost dan u in eerste instantie bespaart.
Tot slot: wij hebben geen verkooppraatjes nodig. Als u alleen een opening nodig heeft en geen nieuwe cilinder, dan zeggen we dat ook. Als uw bestaande slot prima is en alleen schoongemaakt en gesmeerd hoeft te worden, dan doen we dat voor een paar tientjes en gaan we weer. Als u advies vraagt over een complete beveiligingsupgrade, dan krijgt u eerlijk advies waarbij we onderscheid maken tussen 'noodzakelijk', 'verstandig' en 'leuk om te hebben'. U beslist, wij voeren uit.

Hoe snel zijn jullie ter plaatse bij spoed? Binnen Amsterdam doorgaans 10 tot 20 minuten, in de directe omgeving 15 tot 30 minuten. We werken 24/7 met eigen monteurs in de regio.
Werken jullie ook 's nachts en in het weekend? Ja, 24 uur per dag, 7 dagen per week. Het nachttarief geldt tussen 22:00 en 07:00 en wordt vooraf aan de telefoon genoemd. In het weekend overdag geldt het normale tarief.
Wat kost een spoedopening gemiddeld? Een standaard schadevrije opening binnen Amsterdam start vanaf 89 euro. De exacte prijs hangt af van het slot, het tijdstip en de complexiteit. U krijgt vooraf een vaste prijs.
Boren jullie altijd het slot kapot? Nee, in 95 procent van de gevallen openen wij schadevrij. Boren is altijd een laatste optie en alleen na uw expliciete akkoord. Bij boren wordt de cilinder direct vervangen door een SKG***-exemplaar.
Krijg ik een factuur voor mijn verzekering? Ja, u krijgt direct na het werk een nette factuur per e-mail die geschikt is voor uw inboedel- of opstalverzekering.
